What I’d Like You to Know About Me

Your NYC Wedding Officiant, Minister & Celebrant: Adam Phillips

So, who is this guy that you are considering for your wedding ceremony?

Well, I was born, bred and buttered in Manhattan, where I still live!

I am triply-certified by the Celebrant Institute and I am licensed in New York State to perform weddings Statewide and anywhere in the United States.

Many parts of my life have brought me to this work.

My 30-year career as an award-winning journalist has developed my interviewing skills to a professional level. Years of interacting with people at all levels and in a wide array of situations has strengthened my ability to take complicated ideas and emotions and express them in touching and accessible ways. My training in peer co-counseling and as an oral historian and my own life’s journey have made me an empathetic and careful listener.

My lifelong study of the ritual and beliefs of many cultures, including Judaism and the spiritual traditions of North America, Old Europe and the East, has given me a deep well to draw upon when creating and crafting wedding ceremonies of all paths and traditions.

I also have extensive knowledge of secular and sacred poetry and literature (which I have taught) and can offer a couple a myriad of suggestions and ideas for both readings and music. What’s more: I can write for the ear.  That’s just one of the skills I teach as an adjunct professor at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism.

So, what does all of this mean for you?

You have my promise that I will…

  • attend carefully and deeply to what you tell me about yourselves individually and as a couple.
  • ensure that your wishes and sensibilities are heard and appreciated.
  • work to make our journey together to your wedding day relaxed, fun and productive.
  • give my heart to your ceremony and to you.

On a personal note, I am 58 years old, happily married, and the proud father of 22-year-old Noah and Arianna Louise, our two year old daughter. To sum up, I offer you this excerpt from my ordination ceremony:

“I know from experience that spirit is real, and that it lives in us and through us, and sometimes even in spite of us. We are nature too, and so our lives have rhythms, and there are milestones along our path. It is my joy and my honor to offer my service to people as they acknowledge, affirm and celebrate these moments, to help reveal the radiance in everyday life, and to say “yes” to their own lives, the lives of their loved ones, and to their community and the world at large.”
